The twins ranged in age from 6 weeks to 24 weeks. One member of each twin set was placed on each side of a partition in a motor-driven rockerbox, and four 1-minute treatments were administered in mixed order, with 1-minute pre-treatment and post-treatment periods. The treatments consisted of combinations of fast and slow rocking under conditions of sound and no sound. An observer rated the activity level of each twin on a 5-point scale at 30-second intervals. Treatment was associated with a significant decline of infant activity independent of zygosity. Identical twins exhibited marked behavioral consistency compared to fraternal twins during and after treatment. The results appear to provide positive evidence for the role of endogenous, genetically linked regulation of infant response to redundant stimulation. Predicting infant temperament from neonatal reactivity for AGA/SGA twin pairs.

The predictive relation between neonatal reactivity and 12-, 18-, and 24-month temperament was assessed for 22 appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA)/small-for-gestational-age (SGA) twin pairs. Neonatal reactivity included ratings of visual and auditory orienting responses to a bull's-eye, rattle, bell, voice, and face plus voice combined, as well as alertness. Infant temperament ratings were ma...

Cobedding and recovery time after heel lance in preterm twins: results of a randomized trial.

OBJECTIVES Cobedding of preterm twin infants provides tactile, olfactory, and auditory stimulation and may affect pain reactivity. We carried out a randomized trial to assess the effect of cobedding on pain reactivity and recovery in preterm twin neonates. METHODS Stable preterm twins (n = 67 sets) between 28 and 36 weeks of gestational age were randomly assigned to a cobedding group (cared f...

Physiological reactivity to infant crying: a behavioral genetic study.

In this study, we examined adults' cardiac reactivity to repeated infant cry sounds in a genetically informative design. Three episodes of cry stimuli were presented to a sample of 184 adult twin pairs. Cardiac reactivity increased with each cry episode, indicating that subjects were increasingly sensitized to repeated infant distress signals. Non-parents showed more cardiac reactivity than par...

The Effect of Simultaneous Superficial and Proprioceptive Stimulations on Dexterity of Educable 6-7 Years Old Children with Down Syndrome

Objectives: Down syndrome is the most common chrosomal disorder in which the fine and gross motor skills due to lack of proper sensory experience are disturbed. The role of dexterity in activity of daily living, interaction with environment and independency is quiet crucial in Down syndrome. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of simultaneous application of superfici...
